Price Indices and Inflation

Summary - Price Indices and Inflation

The monthly publication of price statistics emphasizes the development of price variations. Price statistics are associated with key indicators including the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Producer Price Indices (Índice de Precios de Productor, or IPP), and the Transport Costs Index (Índice de Costos del Transporte, or ICT). The basket of goods and services of each index is updated every five years to reflect the patterns related to consumption, costs, and production of the sector of interest. Series (tabulations), indices, and variations associated with the different components of the CPI, ICT, and IPP are published and shared with all users on a monthly basis.

The Consumer Price Index is an economic indicator that measures the price variation of a basket of goods and services representative of urban household expenditure. The geographical coverage of the CPI includes all regional capitals and their conurbations zones within the country's borders. The Transport Costs Index is a monthly indicator that records the value of goods and services purchased by companies in the sector of freight transport by road within the country. The purpose of this index is to measure the general evolution of costs associated with the sector.

The Producer Price Indices are indicators that measure the monthly price variation of goods produced and sold by producers of Chile, representing the first channel of commercialization or distribution of the goods traded in the economy. The Producer Price Indices are based on a representative basket of products belonging to each of their productive sectors.
