Recent internal migration4, 5
Internal migration refers to the movement within a country of people who change their habitual residence from one place to another. Comparing the region of residence in 2019 and 2024, 927,598 people migrated from one region to another.
Internal migration is measured by the difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants of each region. A positive figure means that more people have come to live in the region than those who have left (greater immigration). In contrast, a negative figure indicates that more people have left the region than those who have come there to live (greater emigration).
Six regions have negative migration figures: Arica y Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Atacama, the Metropolitan Region, and Magallanes. The Metropolitan Region has the greatest negative figure (-218,317 people). In other words, more people have left the region (397,592) than those who have come there to live (179,275). Nevertheless, the Metropolitan Region has received the largest number of people from other regions. The average age of people who have come to the Metropolitan Region is 33.8 years, while the average age of those who have left is 38.1 years.
The internal migration figures of the ten remaining regions are positive. These regions are located in the center and south of the country, and they include Valparaíso (44,480), La Araucanía (42,842), and Maule (39,688). By comparing the data from the 2017 Census, these three regions have maintained their internal immigration trends. That is, they have maintained a positive figure when comparing the numbers of people who have arrived to region with those who have left.
In the regions of Los Ríos and Aysén, 10.9% and 10.6% of the population, respectively, are people who have come there to live there from other regions. In Ñuble, the percentage is 9.6%. In contrast, the lowest percentage is in the Metropolitan Region (2.7%).
International immigration6
The enumerated population who were born outside the country stood at 1,608,650 people, which represents 8.8% of the total habitually resident population of the country, a proportion that doubled between 2017 and 2024. This proportion was 0.8% in 1992, 1.3% in 2002, and 4.4% in 2017.
The regions in which the population born outside the country represent the greatest proportion of the total population are Tarapacá (23.2%), Antofagasta (19.7%), and Arica y Parinacota (14.9%). In contrast, the regions where this population group represents the lowest proportion of the total population are Los Ríos (1.9%), La Araucanía (2.1%), and Ñuble (2.1%).
The regions with the greatest proportion of the total foreign-born population are the Metropolitan Region (60%), Antofagasta (7.7%), and Valparaíso (6.3%).
Venezuela is the main country of birth7 of the foreign-born population (41.6%), followed by Peru (14.5%), and Colombia (12.3%). In 2017, the highest percentage of international immigrants were from Peru (25.2%) while in 2002 and 1992 the highest percentages were from Argentina (25.8% and 30.3%, respectively). At the regional level, the main country of birth of the foreign born is Venezuela, with the exception of Arica y Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama, where the main country of birth of the foreign-born population is Bolivia; and Aysén, where the international immigrants mainly come from Argentina.
The international immigrant population that arrived before 20178 is 508,178 while those who arrived since 2017 is 1,085,538. The greatest immigration flows occurred in 2017 (10.4%), 2018 (12.4%), and 2019 (10.7%)9.
Among the demographic characteristics of the immigrant population, the average age is 33.5 years, which is five years younger than the average age of people born in Chile (38.5 years).

[4] For the comparison of recent internal migration with previous censuses, habitual residence is used. Movement was observed between the place of residence five years previously (April 2019) and habitual residence at the time of the 2024 Census.
[5] The analysis of the population excludes those under the age of 5, those who resided abroad five years ago, and unknown cases that did not answer the questions on commune or region.
[6] For international immigration, the comparison with previous censuses uses habitual residence. The analysis of international immigration uses data from those who responded to the question on place of birth.
[7] These percentages were calculated according to the population that answered the question on place of birth, which stood at 99.4% of the total population that was supposed to answer the question.
[8] These percentages were calculated according to the population that answered the question on the year of period of arrival, which was 99.1% of the total population that was supposed to answer the question.
[9] These percentages were calculated according to the population that answered the question on the year of arrival.
[10] The average age of the international migrant population and population born population in the country was calculated from the total number of people who answered the question on place of birth (99.4%).
