Labour Informality

Informality and Working Conditions

In this section, you can find the main results on labour informality from the National Employment Survey (ENE), in accordance with the conceptual framework recommended by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Informal employment pertains to a person who, during the reference period of the survey, meets any of the following criteria:

  • Engages in dependent work without access to social security (health and pension benefits) through the employment relationship
  • Engages in independent work inan economic unit that belongs to the informal sector
  • Engages in unpaid activities in a family business (unpaid family worker)

That National Statistics Institute (INE) has published labour informality indicators since July-September 2017 together with their respective conceptual and methodological documentation.

The data are available in Spanish in the following formats:

  • Platform for interactive inquiries: Labour Market Information System (SIMEL)
