In the January–March 2025 quarter, the national informal employment rate was 25.8%

The number informally employed persons decreased 7.4%, which is equivalent to a fall of 194,608 persons.

In the January–March 2025 quarter, the informal employment rate decreased 2.3 percentage points (pp) year on year to stand at 25.8%, according to information from the latest Bulletin of Labour Informality, which is produced by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Furthermore, the number of informally employed persons fell 7.4% year on year to stand at 2,420,033.

The year-on-year decrease in informally employed persons was influenced by falls in men (-6.9%) and women (-8.1%). By age bracket, the decrease can be attributed to the falls in the brackets 45–54 years (-17.4%) and 25–34 years (-9.7%).

By economic sector, the decrease can mainly be attributed to the falls in commerce (-13.3%) and manufacturing (-15.9%).

By occupational group, the main influences on the decrease in informally employed persons were the falls in elementary occupations (-11.1%) and service and sales workers (-7.4%).

By occupational category, the greatest influence on the decrease in informally employed persons was the fall in own-account workers (-5.1%). Following in influence were the falls in wage earners of the private sector (-5.6%), wage earners of the public sector (-18.9%), employers (-42.0%), domestic workers (-11.8%), and unpaid family workers (-17.4%).

Own-account workers and wage earners of the private sector accounted for 87.2% of the total number of informally employed persons, and their informal employment rates were 66.2% and 15.0%, respectively.

The year-on-year decrease in informal own-account workers (-5.1%) was influenced by the falls in men (-5.4%) and women (-4.8%) and by the falls in commerce (-13.7%) and manufacturing (-12.2%).

When is someone informally employed?

Informally employed persons are dependent workers whose employment relationship does not provide access to social welfare benefits (healthcare and pension). The informally employed include those who work independently in a company, business, or activity that belongs to the informal sector. Unpaid family workers are also considered to be informally employed.
