Weddings and Civil Union Agreements
In January 2026, the number of Civil Union Agreements (CUAs) stood at 1,944, an increase of 29.8% compared to January 2025, according to the Vital Statistics Bulletin, which is published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The majority of CUAs (88.4%) were between couples of different sexes, while CUAs between men and between women each made up 5.8% of the total.
Vital statistics of the period show that there were 7,109 marriages in January 2026, which is equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 9.8%.
Deaths
In January 2026, there were 10,478 deaths, of which 5,480 were males (52.3%) and 4,997 were females (47.7%). The total number of deaths in January 2026 represents a year-on-year increase of 2.6%.
The majority of deaths occurred in those aged 60 and over, and they were concentrated in the bracket 80 to 99 years (4,394 deaths, or 41.9% of total deaths). There were 70 deaths of children aged under one year, which represents 0.7% of the total.
Births
In January 2026, 12,717 births (51.7% male and 48.3% female) were observed, a decrease of 1.2% year on year.
According to the age bracket of the mother, the majority of births were to women aged 30 to 34 years (3,766 live births, or 29.6% of total births). Following was the bracket 25 to 29 years (3,248 live births, or 25.5% of the total).
