In the same period, the number of births, marriages, and deaths decreased.
Marriages and Civil Union Agreements (CUAs)
In August 2025, the number of Civil Union Agreements increased 1,674, a year-on-year rise of 11.5%, according to the Vital Statistics Bulletin, which is published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The majority of CUAs (89.5%) were between couples of different sexes, while CUAs between men were 4.9% of the total and those between women were 5.6%. Meanwhile, vital statistics for the period show that there was a total of 3,869 marriages in the country, a year-on-year decrease of 0.1%.
Deaths
In August, 10,989 deaths were observed, of which 5,713 were of males (52%) and 5,276 were of females (48%). The total number of deaths decreased 4.3% year on year. The greatest number of deaths occurred in persons aged 60 and over, and the number of deaths was concentrated in the age bracket 80 to 99 years, which represented 44.2% of the total (4,858 deaths). There were 60 deaths of children under 1 year of age, which is equivalent to 0.5% of the total.
Births
In August, a total of 11,807 births were observed, of which 51.3% were of males and 48.7% were of females. The total number of births fell 6.9% year on year.
According to the mother’s age bracket, the greatest percentage of births were to the bracket 30 to 34 years (29.6% of the total, or 3,498 live births), which was followed by the age bracket 25 to 29 years (25.3%, or 2,990 live births).
