In the same period, the number of births decreased.
Marriages and Civil Union Agreements
In September 2025, the number of Civil Union Agreements (CUAs) increased by 1,599, which represents a year-on-year rise of 29.2%, according to the Vital Statistics Bulletin, which is published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The majority of CUAs (91%) were between couples of different sexes, while CUAs between men represented 4.3% of the total and CUAs between women represented 4.8%.
Meanwhile, the vital statistics for the period show that there were 4,252 marriages in the country, a year-on-year increase of 9%.
Deaths
In September 2025, 10,711 deaths were observed, of which 5,619 were of men (52.5%) and 5,092 were of women (47.5%). The total number represents a year-on-year increase of 0.3%. The greatest number of deaths occurred among those aged 60 years and over, and the number of deaths was concentrated in the age bracket 80 to 99 years, which represented 44.4% of the total (4,759 deaths). There were 71 deaths of children under the age of 1, which was 0.7% of the total.
Births
A total of 12,299 births, 50.8% males and 49.2% females, were recorded in the country in September 2025, which represents a fall of 0.4% compared to September 2024.
According to the mother’s age bracket, the greatest percentage of births was to women in the bracket 30 to 34 years (30.1%, or 3,698 live births), which was followed by the bracket 25 to 29 years (25.1%, or 3,091 live births).
